The pattern this week is defaults that change on paper but not at runtime. Kubernetes enabled Memory QoS by default and nulled the throttling factor in the same release; OpenTelemetry shipped a v1.0.0 processor with a migration guide attached. “On by default” doesn’t mean “no work for me.”

Google releases Gemini 3.8 Live and Live Extended Thinking. Announced 2026-09-15 in the Gemini API. Google reports 82.6 on Artificial Analysis’ Speech to Speech Quality Index and 68.6% on tau-Voice for Extended Thinking. Both run tool calls in the background while the conversation continues. Anthropic opens the Life Sciences Verification Program. As of 2026-09-17, verified teams get Mythos 5.1, Opus 5, and Sonnet 5 with looser biology classifiers in Claude.ai, Claude Code, and the API. Standard Use grants cover a team and renew yearly; High-risk Use grants cover one project and renew every six months. Mythos high-risk access stays limited. Source

Kubernetes 1.37 turns on Memory QoS by default, but writes nothing. The MemoryQoS gate is beta and on for every 1.37 kubelet on cgroup v2, yet memoryThrottlingFactor now defaults to null (0.9 in alpha) and memoryReservationPolicy to None. No memory.high, memory.min, or memory.low is written unless you set them. If you relied on the implicit 0.9, set it explicitly or throttling silently stops. Source

Cilium 1.20 jumps to Gateway API v1.6. Released 2026-09-14 with ExternalAuth, CORS filters, ListenerSets, and TCPRoute/UDPRoute, so non-HTTP traffic goes through the same Gateway resources. AWS ENI IPAM now hands out IPv6 (beta) from a /80 prefix per node. Datapath plugins let cloud providers ship their own eBPF programs outside Cilium’s release cycle. Source

OpenTelemetry’s Kubernetes attributes processor reaches v1.0.0. Posted 2026-09-16. It meets the Collector’s stable criteria and ships in current opentelemetry-collector-contrib and opentelemetry-collector-k8s distros. Stability meant adopting the Kubernetes semantic conventions that went stable in v1.42.0 in June, and that attribute switch can break dashboards. Read the migration guide before you bump. Source

Environment variables as a trace context carrier hit release candidate. The 2026-09-11 spec RC defines how TRACEPARENT, TRACESTATE, and BAGGAGE pass from a CI runner to a shell to a test process, plus a name normalization rule (x-b3-traceid becomes X_B3_TRACEID). Feedback is open through at least 2026-11-02. Child processes see the whole environment, so don’t put secrets in baggage. Source

  • Kubernetes 1.37 native histograms for component metrics: beta, on by default. Source
  • Alpha VolumeBindMountOptions and EmptyDirVolumeMode gates bring noexec/nosuid/nodev to Pod specs. Source
  • Grafana Cloud secrets management is GA with AWS Secrets Manager support. Source
  • Qwen3.8-Omni-Flash: 1M-token context, audio and video input, claimed 98% cheaper voice input. Source

My take

The Memory QoS change is the right call and still a trap. A null default makes the upgrade a no-op for most clusters, but anyone who enabled the alpha gate and leaned on the implicit 0.9 loses throttling with no error. Diff your kubelet config against 1.37 defaults before you roll.

That’s the week. See you next Friday.
