OpenAI and Anthropic led their frontier announcements with safeguards and access tiers rather than scores. Two days later, four model providers had errors in the same morning.

OpenAI rates Astra “Critical” for cyber, its first model at that level – On 2026-09-01 OpenAI said GPT-6 Astra meets the Critical cybersecurity threshold of its Preparedness Framework: it can find and exploit unknown flaws in hardened systems unguided. It scored 100% on ExploitBench and found two zero-days in an internal set of 20 recent V8 bugs. Release is “soon”; advanced cyber access starts with a small alpha group. Source
Anthropic’s Fable 5.1 is cheaper on cache reads – Released 2026-09-01. Anthropic estimates 25% lower cost than Fable 5 for typical workloads and up to about 45% for agentic ones, from cheaper cache reads. Terminal-Bench 4.0 went from 42.0% to 55.8%. Enterprise Frontier Safeguards, which keeps data in customer-controlled cloud storage, arrives in phases this fall. Source

Four model providers degrade in one morning – On 2026-09-03 Anthropic reported elevated errors on Mythos/Fable 5.1, Fable 5, Opus 5, 4.8 and 4.6 from 13:26 to 16:16 UTC. OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Codex incident overlapped; Grok and Gemini drew spikes in user reports. No vendor has published a root cause. Source / OpenAI status / Ars Technica
HPA scale-to-zero is beta and on by default in Kubernetes 1.37 – An HPA on an object or external metric, such as queue lag, can now scale a Deployment to zero and back without an add-on. CPU and memory metrics can’t, since they vanish with the last Pod. Services don’t buffer requests while no Pods are ready, so HTTP workloads still need a buffering layer. Source

Collector v1.66.0/v0.160.0 deprecates flat keepalive fields –
Released 2026-09-02. idle_conn_timeout, max_idle_conns and related fields move under a keepalive section; setting old and new together is an error. Byte-sized batching was O(n^2) because BytesSize() re-walked the batch per request; the size is now cached. Contrib renames dynamic_sampling to adaptive_tail_sampling, no alias.

Datadog fixes the Rust tracing/OpenTelemetry context split –
OpenTelemetry spans created inside an active tracing span landed in a separate trace because OTel’s current context was a single slot. Datadog rewrote it as a stack (opentelemetry-rust #2378), synced the tracing-opentelemetry bridge, and reports 2-4x faster context operations.

My take
Anthropic’s status page named seven affected models; OpenAI’s said “elevated errors” and little else. Incident comms are part of what you buy from a provider.
